Warlords of Mars

Mar04
2012
Written by TheArchivist

Breygent Marketing and Dynamite have team up to create what is looking to be a truly astounding card set, Warlords of Mars. The full release of this card set is due out in late spring, 2012.

The Warlord of Mars is a science fiction novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the third of his famous Barsoom series. Burroughs began writing it in June, 1913, going through five working titles; Yellow Men of Barsoom, The Fighting Prince of Mars, Across Savage Mars, The Prince of Helium, and The War Lord of Mars.

The finished story was first published in All-Story Magazine as a four-part serial in the issues for December, 1913-March, 1914. It was later published as a complete novel by A. C. McClurg in September, 1919.

Warlords of Mars
Plot summary

John Carter discovers that a First Born knows the secret of the Temple of the Sun and he and the Holy Hekkador Matai Shang want to rescue the Holy Thern’s daughter, who is imprisoned with Dejah Thoris and another Barsoomian princess, Thuvia of Ptarth. John Carter follows them in the hope of liberating his beloved wife. His antagonists flee to the north, taking the three women along. Thereafter John Carter follows them untiring into the north polar regions where he discovers more fantastic creatures and ancient, mysterious Martian races. These he overcomes in battle, and is later proclaimed “Warlord of Barsoom” by his allies. This book is the last to feature Tars Tarkas, John Carter’s ally, in any major role; indeed, the green Barsoomians of whom Tars Tarkas is an oligarch disappear altogether from most of the later novels.

Below is the front of the 1st promo card, which will be distributed at the Emerald City Comic Con 2012.

MAIN CHARACTERS
John Carter: Protagonist of the first three novels. Carter is an American Civil War veteran, transported to the planet Mars by a form of astral projection. There, he encounters both formidable alien creatures and various waring Martian races, wins the hand of Martian princess Dejah Thoris, and rises to the position of Warlord of Mars.

Dejah Thoris: A Martian Princess of Helium, who is courageous, tough and always holds her resolve, despite being frequently placed in both mortal danger and the threat of being dishonored by the lust of villains. She is the daughter of Mors Kajak, jed of Lesser Helium and granddaughter of Tardos Mors, jeddak of Helium; highly aristocratic; and fiercely proud of her heritage. She is the love interest of John Carter. She was imprisoned by the Martian false deity Issus, at the end of The Gods of Mars. A central character in the first three Barsoom novels, whose capture by various enemies, and subsequent pursuit by John Carter, is a constant motivating force in these tales.

Tars Tarkas: A Green Martian, who becomes the ally of John Carter and at his behest, the overlord of his clan. An archetypal noble savage, and considered John Carter’s first and closest friend upon Barsoom.

Thuvia of Ptarth: A Princess of Ptarth, who appears in The Gods of Mars as a slave girl rescued by John Carter from the Therns. She is later imprisoned with Carter’s wife Dejah Thoris, in a prison which can only be opened once per year and remains by her side until the conclusion of The Warlord of Mars. Like many of Burroughs’ heroines, she is tough, courageous, proud, and strongly identified with her aristocratic position in Martian society.

Top Ten Rare and Best Baseball Cards

Feb28
2012
Written by Jack

Some of the best baseball cards are also the rarest cards that are normally collected by the historians and card collectors and they have high value.

Baseball cards value depends on its edition and availability. If a baseball card is rare and hard to find and has been popular in the past then it will sure have high price in the market than the latest ones, which are not that popular. Baseball sports cards value plays a major role when you have a specific edition baseball card pack that you are willing to sell at a good price. Some of the best sports cards are the vintage rookie cards that have been an obsession for countless historians and collectors.

Baseball cards value depends on various factors such as their rarity, demand and significance. Since the process of ascertaining the baseball cards value is a lengthy process, it usually takes time before their value skyrocket. So, finding one can be a daunting task. It is extremely difficult to find baseball rookies cards in perfect mint condition; owning one of your own is considered as an achievement in itself. Here is a list of some of the best and rare baseball rookie cards.

- Boston Red Sox-1954 Bowman Ted Williams costs around $2,000 to $3,000. Ted Williams signed originally with Topps.

- New York Yankees- 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle costs around $12,000 to $18,000. In the 1980s, it took card collecting to a whole new level.

- New York/San Francisco Giants- 1951 Bowman Willie Mays costs around $2,000 to $3,000. This is an all time famous rookie card and Willie Mays, is one of the greatest players in the history of baseball.

- Cleveland Indians- 1949 Leaf Leroy “Satchel” Paige costs around $3, 500 to $6,000. This is a single card that was printed in his honor as Paige spent 22 years of glory with the Negro Leagues. This card was printed in the later part of his career.

- New York Yankees- 1938 Goudey Heads Up Joe DiMaggio costs around $2,000 to $3,500. Joe DiMaggio is the only player in baseball history who achieved 56 game hitting streaks. His record has never been broken.

- New York Yankees- 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth costs around $3,500 to $5,000. This is one of the rarest cards of an all time famous slugger.

- Philadelphia Phillies- 1933 Goudey Nap Lajoie costs around $20,000 to $30,000. This card was not the part of the original 1933 Goudey set. In order to get this card, the collectors had to request in writing.

Apart from these there are 1914 Cracker Jack Chicago white sox, 1914 Cracker Jack Detroit tigers, and 1909 white border Pittsburgh Pirates.

The baseball cards value of these editions range from $9,000 to $2,350,000. These are some of the best baseball cards that are rarely found.

Area Priests are the Stars of Trading Cards

Feb24
2012
Written by Emily

You may have seen trading cards with statistics on baseball players and other sports figures, but have you seen the St. John Vianney Priesthood Cards?

Kids in the region are collecting and trading them like sports cards but they feature photos of priests in the Omaha Archdiocese.

The statistics are such things as childhood parish, seminary school, favorite prayer and saintly friend.

Four women of Omaha’s St. Peter Catholic Church created the cards to honor priests and to interest more children in religious vocations. They printed 30,000 packs of cards in July and have sold about two-thirds of them.

“We did not realize how huge it would be,” Lori Mellender said. “They are ordinary men who have answered an extraordinary call. It has opened up the kids’ eyes to interesting lives the priests live. It’s made the priests more human to them.”

Children have been intrigued that priests have lives beyond church and school and that they own dogs, enjoy hobbies and travel to faraway places. And the kids have been surprised by some amazing facts priests shared on the cards.

Among the most startling, Mellender said, was the card for James Novotny, pastor of Holy Family Parish in Lindsay, Neb.: “I fought a bear and chased him up a tree, carried a backpack 2,000 miles, paddled a canoe 2,000 miles and was kissed on the hand by Mother Teresa.”

Since the cards have been distributed, Mellender has noticed children getting excited when a priest visits their church or school and saying something like: “That’s father ‘so-and-so’ and I have his card.”

Mellender traced the genesis for the trading cards to a trivia game night almost a year ago at St. Peter Catholic Church near 28th and Leavenworth Streets. Sister Maryann Frances Polson of the Daughters of the Eternal Father in Omaha mentioned to those sitting near her that not enough had been done to draw attention to the Catholic Year for Priests, which concluded in June 2010.

Someone mentioned holy cards, and that was all it took. Mellender and fellow parishioners Diane Anderson, Cathy Hula and Melia Vankat decided to meet for a “moms night out” to brainstorm ideas.

They wanted something that would be of interest to children like their own and something that would encourage kids to think about religious callings. The women believed the trading cards would work.

More than half of the priests in the archdiocese — 121 out of 220 — agreed to participate in the project, Mellender said.

“Some of the priests weren’t sure about being on the cards,” Mellender said. To make sure the cards were dignified, the women decided to name the cards in honor of St. John Vianney, the patron of parish priests.
“We wanted everybody to get to know all the priests in the archdiocese and pray for them and to see the variety of people called to the priesthood,” Mellender said. “One little girl stores her cards by birthday so she knows who to pray for that week.”

Approximately 2,000 cards were printed on each priest. Then the cards were randomly sorted into packages of eight cards each.

The packages have been distributed at church events in the area for a suggested donation of $1 per pack. The proceeds were then donated to the Archdiocesan Seminarian Fund to pay for the education of new priests. By January, card donations totaled $15,000.

Some people have been so enthusiastic that the women now have collector sets with all 121 cards for a suggested donation of $100.

Mellender said the project has been fun for the four women involved with it. Two of them e-mailed and phoned priests to get information for the cards. The other two solicited funding for printing and packaging the cards.

People in 10 other archdioceses have contacted the women about how to create a priesthood card tradition in their archdioceses, and the foursome began work on a manual in response.

St. John Vianney Priesthood Cards are available in some religious bookstores. Additional information is online at http://stvianneycards.com.
